National Caregivers Month

For the People Who Show Up

Behind every cancer diagnosis are people who show up in countless ways.

This November, PORTCAST with Ron Bennington is joining the American Cancer Society to celebrate caregivers everywhere — starting with someone very close to home, Gail Bennington.

For two hours a day, Gail is Ron's co-host on The Bennington Show. For 24 hours a day, she's his daughter. And since Ron's stage IV colon cancer diagnosis in March 2026, she's taken on another role: his health advocate and caregiver.

From fielding doctors' calls and managing MyChart to scheduling appointments, tracking test results, discussing treatment options, keeping lists, and helping make difficult decisions, Gail handles countless details that come with navigating a serious illness. It's a role that requires patience, persistence, and love.

Gail is one of millions of people who quietly take on these responsibilities every day, often while juggling their own lives, jobs, and families.

This Caregivers Month, we're celebrating Gail and everyone who shows up for someone they love. We love you.

Caregivers are your doctors, your nurses, and the dedicated staff at hospitals and medical offices. We appreciate every single one of them. But November is about celebrating a different kind of caregiver: the people in our everyday lives.

Your mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, daughters and sons. Your grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

The people who sit beside you during chemo. Who watch your kids while you go to doctor's appointments. Who bring you a meal, invite you to a movie, or just show up when you need them. The ones who send a text, make a phone call, or leave a heart on your Instagram post. The people who remind you, in big ways and small, that you're not going through this alone.

Caregiving doesn't always look like caregiving. Sometimes it looks like love, friendship, laughter, or simply being there.

So throughout November, and all year long, remember to say thank you. Even though they don't expect it. Even though they'd do it all again without being asked. Because these are the people who show up for us. And they're the best of us.
